The Pakistan telecommunication authority (PTA) rescinded a ban on video sharing service youtube on may 27, one week after the popular service was restricted to Pakistani users.

On May 19, the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an order to the Pakistan telecommunication authority, directing to ban the social networking website, facebook, becuase of the “blasphemous” content on it. On May 20, youtube was also banned “in view of growing sacrilegious contents on it,” stated a PTA press release.

However, immediately after access to the service was restored, users reported that controversial videos related to the subject of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were accessible.

The PTA had previously banned youtube once beofre, in Feb 2008, in an attempt to block acess to “blasphemous” cartoons. The move sirupted worldwide access to the website.
